Entanglement
My current body of work, ‘Entanglement’ was inspired by backpacking the Lost Coast Trail. Out in the wild for days at a time, the boundaries of the body dissolve and you become full present, at one with the environment around you. This work explores that moment of transition.
The work blends ecology and corporeality to subvert the western landscape tradition. These manipulated canvases explore the wild as an extended bodily field, examining land as expression and extension of self and culture. The work is grounded in integration and reciprocity, questioning ingrained cultural beliefs of separation from nature.
The forms, colors and textures in the work emerge from immersive experiences in wild remote places, where I create creates field sketches and document impressions using photographs, video and drawings. These are synthesized into abstract sculptures and installations that articulate the lived experience of being in relationship with the wild.
